Ekans -- Arbok

This morning I finished Ekans and Arbok while watching the Vuelta. My two commentators don't agree on anything... they're almost more entertaining than the bike race. Anyways, I really like how Ekans turned out, but find Arbok a bit contrived. Colin likes the Arbok dress because it reminds him of some video game character design, which means absolutely nothing to me. I wanted to make these two look a little bit evil... Instead of staying with a bright, jarring yellow that is present in Ekans' anatomy, I decided to just use gold ornamentation in place of it. There's a fairly long snake wound around the body of the dress. I imagine in real life, there would either be hinges on the front and some way to connect them in the back, or it would be a very pliable sort of material that could be adjusted after putting it on. I tried to keep it tight around the body so it was a little snake-like and sort of went with an Egyptian thing. And purple python shoes. As with all my pokedresses and other artwork, click for a larger, more detailed view and please do not copy or reproduce without my permissions, thanks!

As I mentioned earlier, I find Arbok a bit contrived and am tempted to redo it with different ideas later. I'll show it to you anyways. I used snake fang ornaments (probably not real snake fangs, I feel that would be cruel) and silver jewelery. All my notes on the page say gold, but it just didn't look good. Slightly different color scheme from Ekans, but a similar floaty thing going on at the bottom of the dress. I used the same python pattern for a snake design on the back of the shoes. Still not sure how I feel about the large hood-like thing...

Anyways, hope you enjoyed them, Pikachu and Raichu are up next! Not looking forward to Pikachu, it will turn into a cliche sooo easily.

Oh, PS. I finished a new Artsy Moleskine pic yesterday, so look for that popping up somewhere in the next couple days.

Ciao!

  1. Love the Arbok dress. I will say I'm not feeling the hood, I get why it's there, but I think it may work better as a low back with a patterned shawl. I do get the "evil" vibe more from it than Ekans, especially the base fabric. Also, the SHOES! SPOT ON! you should just make a line of Pokémon-inspired couture shoes.

    Fantastic work

    1. Thank you sooo much! I get what you're saying with Arbok.. I do agree.. there is probably some design that could incorporate a better type of hood :)
And thanks on the shoes! ^_^

  2. I get a Cleopatra-esque feel from the Ekans dress more than anything. Venomous, but alluring.

  3. I think you should make it an actual hood with a cobra interior like http://anina.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/05/05/04.jpg
to maintain the punky-modernesque feel and avoid the awkward cowl thing.

But I love your drawings, I think your line work is amazingly elegant and yet sharp.
